In 2022, VCU’s School of Business approached Post Captain Consulting with a bold question: could Slate replace Cvent as the engine behind RETC, its flagship Real Estate Trends Conference? With 1,500+ attendees, 100 sponsors, and a complex registration structure, the event required robust functionality, from group sign-ups to invoice generation. But beyond a working system, the team needed a long-term solution that they could own and scale year over year.
Sustainable Solutions, Built for Better Outcomes
Instead of adapting old workflows, our team saw the opportunity to build something better. Working closely with the Kornblau Real Estate Program, we designed a sustainable Slate solution that reduced staff workload, improved user experience, and cut licensing costs. Built with the future in mind, this system now powers the largest business conference on campus.
To ensure long-term success, we began with a collaborative discovery process by mapping out every step and every stakeholder involved. By building the infrastructure in layers, we helped RETC staff (many of whom were new to Slate) confidently manage registration, payment, communications, and check-in, all within a system they now fully own.
The RETC team now manages their conference entirely in Slate, without external tools or developers. We built a flexible architecture and branded portals to support group registrations, sponsor benefits, and easy edits, giving non-technical users full control over the event from start to finish.
Name badge prep that once took days now happens in seconds. With QR check-in and dynamic formatting based on attendee type, our on-demand printing solution eliminated manual sorting and long lines. We also automated registration creation, saving staff hours and reducing errors before the event.
By replacing Cvent with a fully integrated Slate solution, VCU eliminated ongoing licensing fees and gained a flexible, future-ready platform. Custom shopping cart-style forms and reusable infrastructure now allow for minimal staff effort and easy updates year after year.
