In Spring 2022, Hastings College turned to Post Captain Consulting after the departure of their Slate captain left a gap in team capacity and instance management. Concerned that they “didn’t know what they didn’t know,” the institution wanted to ensure their Slate instance followed best practices while also bringing their team up to speed.
Optimizing Processes, Strengthening Teams
When Hastings faced a gap in Slate expertise, Post Captain guided the team through a comprehensive audit while providing hands-on support. This approach turned a challenging transition into a learning opportunity, helping the team take ownership of improvements.
Together, they redesigned the application status portal, optimized event templates, implemented configurable joins, updated application pages, and consolidated decision codes. Within a year, these changes not only streamlined workflows but also transformed the Hastings team into a confident Slate team, ready to manage their instance proactively.
All of Hastings’ legacy workflows were reengineered to leverage automations, custom views, dashboards, and reader tabs. These updates support tailored review processes, including GPA calculations and committee evaluations, making the admissions review process faster, smoother, and more efficient.
Hastings’ redesigned Application Status Portal now offers distinct views for applicants, admits, and enrolling students, creating a dynamic, personalized experience. Students receive targeted communications, clear checklists, and intuitive next steps, all within an interface that’s easier for staff to manage and customize.
With guidance from Post Captain, the Hastings team gained confidence and deep expertise in Slate. Today, they are a model “Slate Team,” proactively managing their instance with structured change management, continuous process improvements, and a user-first approach.
